FYI: The title Laugh-In is a reference to the late-1960s hippie “love-in.”

LAUPER, CYNDI

When Cyndi Lauper appeared on the music scene in 1983, it seemed as if she had stepped out from a comic-strip panel. Her hair was cut into an odd asymmetrical style (one side longer than the other) and colored in a variety of primary hues (blue, pink, yellow, and more). She wore clashing ragtag clothing found at secondhand stores (Manhattan’s Screaming Mimi’s was her favorite). And she talked and sang in a squeaky, high-pitched Betty Boop-ish voice.

Born on June 20, 1953, in Queens, New York, Lauper performed in dive bars in and around the Big Apple and fronted a band, Blue Angel, before hitting the big time with her 1984 debut album, She’s So Unusual. The LP went platinum, generating four Top Ten singles, including the fun-loving anthem for a girls’ night out, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “She Bop” (a witty tribute to masturbation), and two heartfelt ballads, “Time After Time” and “All Through the Night.” With repeated exposure on MTV, Lauper was one of the first stars created by the music-video revolution. For a short while, she was involved with the pro-wrestling circuit, palling around with wrestler Captain Lou Albano, and even finding time to manage Wendy Richter, the female world wrestling champion. Considered the most promising female singer of the mid-1980s (she won the 1984 Best New Artist Grammy Award), the talented Lauper’s quirky cartoon image stereotyped her, so that the music-buying public never really took her seriously.
